MIND Editor's Note
A Message to MIND Readers and Advertisers from the Editor-in-Chief of
MICROSOFT INTERACTIVE DEVELOPER
and MICROSOFT SYSTEMS JOURNAL

      Friday, May 29, 1998
      Greetings!
I am writing to tell you about an exciting new partnership between Microsoft and Miller Freeman. Starting today, we are joining forces to produce Microsoft Interactive Developer (MIND). Beginning with this issue, Miller Freeman becomes the publisher for both MIND and Microsoft Systems Journal (MSJ).
Since 1991, my editorial staff here in New York City has worked with Miller Freeman to produce MSJ. Due to this partnership, MSJ is the leading publication for software developers seeking high-quality, hardcore information on the latest Microsoft systems technologies. Miller Freeman has been key to MSJ's success, bringing to the table their expertise in all business aspects of publishing. Because of their efforts we have watched MSJ's readership and advertising grow consistently year after year. Now, Miller Freeman's publishing expertise will be applied to both MIND and MSJ.
As you are probably already aware, MIND was previously published in partnership with Fawcette Technical Publications. Although we have great respect for the Fawcette organization, Microsoft terminated Fawcette's right to publish MIND on May 14th and immediately shifted publication of MIND to Miller Freeman, Inc. We know from our seven years of partnership with Miller Freeman that MIND is getting a hard-working, industry savvy, straightforward, and effective publisher. And it's a winning partnership for MIND readers and advertisers as well.
I want to stress some key points about our new publishing arrangement with Miller Freeman:
MIND will continue to reach exactly the same readers Miller Freeman will mail MIND each month to exactly the same list of readers that was in use by Fawcette Technical Publications just prior to Microsoft terminating Fawcette's right to publish MIND. This means MIND readers will experience no interruption in service. Each and every MIND reader will continue to receive MIND each month for the duration of his or her original subscription, just as expected. Readers who purchase MIND at the newsstand will find it more readily, due to Miller Freeman's efforts to widen MIND's newsstand distribution. And advertisers who place their ads with Miller Freeman to run in MIND will continue to reach the key, core developers exploiting Microsoft's Web technologies.
MIND's editorial mission remains the same My editorial staff here in New York City and the same stable of top industry authors will continue to be sourcing every single feature and column that readers see in MIND. It'll be the same unsurpassed content that has made MIND the world's most widely read publication for information on Microsoft technologies for Internet and intranet development.
MIND is the magazine with the Microsoft-specific content My entire editorial staff and I work for Microsoft. We have unequaled direct access to the people in Redmond who are actually creating Microsoft's technologies for the Web. That's why we can bring MIND readers the most up-to-date, most detailed, and most accurate stories on these Microsoft technologies.
One publisher for both MIND and MSJ means better opportunities for advertisers Miller Freeman will offer special discounted combination rates to advertisers who choose to run in more than one MFI publication, including MSJ. Miller Freeman also plans to offer reduced-price combination subscriptions to readers who subscribe or renew to both MIND and MSJ, meaning faster circulation growth for both publications. Plus, expect to see a new editorial synergy between both magazines.
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions or feedback, or if I can be of any further assistance.

      Regards,
