Programming Windows CE

For those of you interested in making small computers do big things, read Programming Microsoft® Windows® CE (Microsoft Press, 1998) by MIND contributing editor Doug Boling.
Programming Microsoft Windows CE
In this practical, authoritative reference guide, Doug takes you under the hood of the streamlined Win32® API. He reviews the basics of event-driven development and tackles the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of this modular, compact architecture. The book contains software development tools on CD-ROM, too. After writing some killer apps, you can bench-press the 880-page book and regain the muscle mass lost while programming. Find out more about the book at http://mspress.microsoft.com/prod/books/1596.htm.

Put Some Charm in Your Web Pages

Mainstay is shipping PageCharmer Pro, a collection of 22 customizable Java applets designed to offer cross-browser, cross-platform alternatives to DHTML. PageCharmer Pro applets offer DHTML-like control objects and interactive display billboard banners and graphs that require no programming or scripting. Button and imagemap controllers send messages to billboards and banners for interactive text, graphics, animation, and multimedia displays.
Mainstay
PageCharmer Pro applets work in both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator without modification. Using Mainstay's AppletSet'r technology, the applets are WYSIWYG-customizable—in real time—directly within a Web browser. Displays can change automatically when a user interacts with a live PageCharmer Pro button or imagemap, which is done via AppletEvents sent among various applets (or optionally via JScript®). Elements of the billboards can react to events, or you can choreograph control of the applets located anywhere in a Web page. The PageConductor applet provides autopilot event sequence control, while the SoundConductor applet provides coordinated sound, voice, and music among various applets. Your New Stuff columnist played with PageCharmer at Comdex, and had to be torn away from the demo computer as the show closed. Check it out.
