Automate Content Generation

WebGecko Software LLC recently announced the public beta of Active Page Generator 1.0 (APGen), a new tool for automating Web site content generation.
WebGecko
APGen allows you to take advantage of reuse, encapsulation, and automation with the goal of easier site construction, maintenance, and upgrades. APGen transforms COM-accessible data into XML, and similarly transforms XML data into other formats. APGen does not require a Web server and allows you to render XML independent of HTTP requests, which offers scalability improvements over generating XML on the Web server. APGen publishes dynamic data to static pages, which can then be viewed from CDs, laptops, or other devices that are disconnected from the network.

InstallShield for
Windows 2000-based Apps

InstallShield Software Corporation has begun shipping InstallShield for Windows® Installer 1.0 (ISWI), an installation tool that helps developers author and build Windows 2000 logo-compliant installation packages.
InstallShield
ISWI's wizards and advanced tools give developers access to a wide range of innovative setup features while taking full advantage of the new Microsoft Windows Installer service. ISWI incorporates a number of product features that help streamline installer package development, including installation/uninstallation of application components, advertising applications, automatically repairing key product files that have been corrupted, and rollback to the computer's original state in the case of a failed installation.

ISWI's dynamic data links and path variables quickly automate file and component linking at build time. Instead of manually updating installation components and linking them, ISWI can automatically attach the most recent versions of all associated setup files, enables software developers to export all dialog strings for translation by other resources, and imports the new strings all at once. To simplify every step of the development process, ISWI's intuitive authoring format offers a series of wizards to assist in a range of development situations. In addition, InstallShield for Windows Installer will be bundled with InstallShield 6.0 Professional, which is planned to be released in the third quarter of 1999.

Testing Your Web Site

Tetranet Software has released Linkbot Pro 4.1, an automated Web site testing solution that features the Website Quality Index (WQI).
Tetranet
The WQI allows you to quickly compare and track your Web site against your peers, competitors, and the Fortune 500. Along with the ability to parse through JScript® and HTML 4.0, Linkbot Pro can scan through <FORM> tags, allowing you to check all sections of your Web site. With Linkbot Pro, Web development teams can quickly detect and repair quality and usability problems that plague their Internet enterprise.

The WQI is intended to answer the question: how does my Web site rate? The index is composed of the total number of broken internal links, broken external links, slow pages, pages missing titles, and broken anchors found on a Web site, then calculates the average per 1,000 links. Users will then be able to see how their Web site's index rates against an ongoing Fortune 500 list, as well as other more specific sectors such as telecommunications, software manufacturers, hardware manufacturers, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce, high-tech, and so on.

Other features include the ability to search and find broken links in pages containing <FORM> tags, and a detailed metatag report. Linkbot Pro is integrated with Macromedia Dreamweaver, Allaire Homesite, and Microsoft® FrontPage® so each member of your Web team can easily test their Web content prior to adding pages to their site. A free evaluation copy of Linkbot Pro is available for download from the Tetranet Web site.

Calculate with C++

To overcome the calculation limitations and loopholes of C++ that derive from its roots as a scientific programming language for minicomputers, Base One International Corporation has created its new Base/1 Number Class software. This technology performs the same kind of highly precise mathematical calculations previously only found on mainframe computers.
Base One
C++ lacks features to support high-precision decimal arithmetic used repeatedly in financial, engineering, or scientific calculations. The C++ native numeric data types (int, long, float, double, and so on) work quite well in many situations, but their underlying binary representation and limited precision present problems that become more apparent as the number of significant digits increases.

Base/1 Number Class enables programmers to improve the accuracy of arithmetic in any C++ application and is a general-purpose alternative to the built-in numeric data types of C++, with added safeguards against a variety of common and not-so-common errors. Number Class includes fully documented ANSI/C++ source code to let programmers write more accurate programs on any platform. Conversion of existing programs is easy. Just include one header, substitute the Number Class for the C++ numeric data type in any or all declarations, and the rest of the code stays exactly the same. Capabilities include exact decimal arithmetic, up to 100 significant digits of precision with the decimal point at any desired digit, elimination of pervasive rounding errors, automatic detection of overflows, and efficient arithmetic on both very large and very small numbers.

Traffic Tracking

Sane Solutions LLC and Cobalt Networks recently announced the availability of NetTracker Professional and NetTracker Enterprise for the Cobalt RaQ and RaQ 2 server appliances. Offering NetTracker on Cobalt server appliances allows ISPs to provide their customers with detailed Web site traffic statistics.

NetTracker 4.0 Professional and NetTracker 4.0 Enterprise are targeted for ISPs and Web hosting companies because the software only has to be installed once. The Web browser interface allows their customers to easily access NetTracker reports remotely via the Internet with little training required. This feature makes NetTracker reports accessible to nontechnical personnel such as sales and marketing managers. Since NetTracker resides on the Cobalt server appliance where the log files are stored, users do not have to download large log files to their computers.

NetTracker Professional and NetTracker Enterprise contain a wide variety of standardized summary reports with drill down capabilities, enabling users to dynamically link to get very detailed Web site traffic information. In addition, both products allow users to export data for use in popular software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and Word.
