MIND

New Stuff
newstuff@microsoft.com
Theresa W. Carey

Back in June during PC Expo, when I wasn't spending a fun-filled hour stuck in an elevator with Editor Eric Maffei and assorted other MIND-folk, I was checking out the show to find great new stuff for developers. Too bad you weren't there with us in the elevator, but your time is probably better spent pounding on the keyboard. Here's what turned up once New York's Finest let us loose.

Managing and Monitoring Networks

While utilizing the failure notification system in the broken elevator, which consisted of ringing the alarm bell and screaming in unison, the group stuck in the elevator thought it would have been just terrific if the building management was running a program that let them know that an important system component was not functioning. Don't let this happen to your network—check out these solutions.

Ripple
Ripple Technologies Inc. recently introduced version 2.1 of LogCaster, which is a suite of network services dedicated to the real-time monitoring of Windows NT® event logs, TCP/IP servers and devices, and Windows NT system and application services. LogCaster provides log management through event filtering and caching, routing of events to various media such as pagers, email, ODBC databases, SNMP traps, and others. You can also configure LogCaster to monitor and manage from multiple consoles on a Windows NT-based workgroup. The installation uses push technology, so you install from one spot on the network and push to the other nodes. You can configure LogCaster to initiate certain event-driven corrective actions, minimizing downtime. The program contains numerous filters so you can decide which events to monitor, and it's also designed to keep hackers out of the network with its security controls.

Breakout
Breakout Software took the opportunity to announce MonitorIT 1.0 at PC Expo, which has a Web browser interface for its performance monitoring and analysis tool for 32-bit Windows®-based systems and servers. Performance data tracked includes hardware (network, memory, disk storage, and CPU), operating system, and software applications such as Microsoft Internet Information Server and ES.
MonitorIT tracks any information specified through the use of performance counters. Real-time and historical reporting and analysis of selected performance data is provided, while Active Graphing features let administrators watch network and system performance levels in real time. VCR-like controls allow administrators to forward, reverse, fast forward/reverse, and stop for optimized visual display and examination. All charts and reports are generated in Dynamic HTML. MonitorIT's Intelligent Performance Wizard identifies bottlenecks and recommends a strategy for enhancing performance.

SiteAssure
Platform Computing Corporation recently released the SiteAssure Suite, aimed at e-commerce operators using Cisco Systems' load balancing devices. SiteAssure supports Windows NT, HP/UX, IRIX, IBM AIX, Solaris, and Linux systems, as well as all major Web application and database servers and numerous Internet services. The suite consists of two components, Load Manager and Incident Manager. With Load Manager, customers define application paths that list all the system and application resources required to satisfy user requests. Agents within each resource send a value indicating that resource's health to the Application Information Manager, which coordinates all the health values. A Load Balancing Device Agent uses the health values and communicates with the Cisco device to reflect the overall system's health. Load Manager will stop sending requests to a path that isn't responding until corrective action is taken. Incident Manager monitors the various performance metrics of computing resources, and actions are triggered when predefined thresholds and conditions are reached. Incident Manager will then take corrective action, such as restarting hanging systems and applications, then notify IT personnel through email or paging. Incident Manager's rules-based engine lets users associate sets of actions with conditions that occur in their specific environment.

Build in Content Editing Capability

Revize
Idetix Inc. is shipping version 2.1 of Revize, a platform and Web server-independent client/server content management system that enables Web developers to build secure content editing capabilities into new or existing Web sites. With Revize 2.1, authorized content contributors can use any Java language-enabled browser to edit Web site content, while site and page layout remains protected. In addition, Revize 2.1 simplifies options for ISPs and site administrators by providing FTP capabilities for Revize to upload its information to any Web site.
Other improvements in the new release include support for Apple Macintosh clients and security features that further ensure the integrity of Revize Web pages. Revize 2.1 allows structured distributed collaboration among technical and nontechnical contributors with the appropriate levels of security and control. The improved module editor now adds and deletes database fields automatically without the risk of deleting sensitive information. RevizeScript commands provide greater flexibility when handling Web data such as HTML code and URLs, and the Turbo Client installer supports automatic client-side upgrades, making it simple for all users to work with the most current version of Revize available. In addition, all Revize modules can now be conveniently managed through the Revize Control Panel.

Test Applications Prior to Deployment

WebLoad
RadView Software Inc. recently introduced WebLoad 3.5, its Web application testing software, which unifies load, performance, and functional testing into a single process. WebLoad 3.5 allows users to verify the scalability and integrity of Web applications at the per-client, per-transaction, per-instance level under user-defined load conditions. By creating and analyzing a Document Object Model (DOM) for every virtual client during a test session, WebLoad is able to verify successes and failures and present detailed information to the user about each transaction.
Major features include integrated functional testing, data drilling, application server integration, synchronization points, and the ability to dynamically adjust loads during the test session with the Virtual Client Throttle. WebLoad creates the DOM for each virtual client, providing users with the ability to access and verify all of the objects and attributes of every Web page including tables, forms, links, images, and headers. WebLoad can test Web applications running in any computing environment; all systems participating in the test must be TCP/IP-enabled.

Migrating Computers

DesktopDNA
Desktop DNA, which personalizes system migrations and is published by Miramar Systems, was launched at PC Expo. With Desktop DNA, a user can move the contents of a machine running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT across platforms to another PC or to multiple PCs while maintaining its user settings (DNA). Users can upgrade from one Windows platform to another, making it possible to transfer not only files and applications, but also such settings as Start menu, printer, application and browser favorites, and toolbars.
In a corporate setting, where sets of applications or files often need to be replicated on many machines, the items selected for migration can be saved as a DNA File, then used to create multiple desktops. The settings can also be backed up to the network for disaster recovery. Desktop DNA uses a wizard interface to guide users through a customizable system migration, including validation and log reports. Multiuser packs are now available.

Specify, Design, and Generate

Excel
Excel Software recently announced WinA&D 3.0 and MacA&D 7.0 for system analysis, requirements specification, software design, and code generation. They've added Java code generation, design namespaces, UML enhancements, dictionary enhancements, and productivity features.
WinA&D/MacA&D have diagram editors for process models, data models, class models, state models, object models, structure models, and task models. Each model shows a different view of a software system that is integrated through a global data dictionary. In addition to integrated modeling, the tool provides requirements specification and traceability, design verification reports, scriptable HTML reports, and complete text import/export features.
WinA&D/MacA&D generates Java language, Object Pascal, or C++ code from a class model and associated dictionary information. The generated code includes ready-to-compile class declarations with empty function frames. Programmers write code for the logic of each function using either the integrated code and browse window built into WinA&D/MacA&D or any standard development environment. The code generator supports features like nested classes, template classes, overloaded functions, and mapping design elements to different code folders based on design namespaces. Typical components include ActiveX® controls, COM objects, CORBA objects, and Java Beans.
