Windows 98 and Microsoft Fax

Those of you who've upgraded to Windows 98 may be wondering what happened to Microsoft Fax. For the most part, Microsoft Fax isn't a part of the Windows 98 operating system unless you upgraded from Windows 95 and had Microsoft Fax installed and fully functional before upgrading.

If your installation of Microsoft Fax or Windows Messaging was damaged during the Windows 98 upgrade, you can re-install the files from the Windows 98 CD-ROM. The Wms.exe file located in the \Tools\Oldwin95\Message\US folder installs both Windows Messaging and the Microsoft Mail workgroup post office utility, and the Awfax.exe file installs Microsoft Fax. Keep in mind that these files are designed specifically to correct damaged files of pre-existing Windows Messaging and Microsoft Fax installations and weren't tested on non-upgrade installations of Windows 98. Also, don't install the Wms.exe file (Windows Messaging) on computers that have Exchange Server Client installed.

Otherwise, if you didn't upgrade to Windows 98 from Windows 95 or 3.1 and want to have the ability to send and receive faxes, you must purchase a third-party fax product. One we suggest you check out is Symantec's WinFax Pro. You can download a trial copy of version 9.0 from www.symantec.com/winfax/index.html.
