What this Guide Contains

The guide is made up of the following general sections:

P&M Overview

This section provides an overview of the various services the Personalization and Membership feature offers. It also describes in general terms the set of COM objects provided by P&M that allow programmers to configure and use the system and interact with information stored in the Membership Directory Service.

Setting Up Your Programming Environment

This section provides details that programmers can use to quickly set up their programming environments and start using the P&M COM objects. Descriptions for Microsoft Visual C++® version 5.0, Java, Microsoft Visual Basic® version 5.0, and scripting languages such as Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript) and JavaScript are listed.

Programming Examples

This section provides programming examples of many common tasks such as configuration of the P&M services and using the Active User Object (AUO) to access a user’s information. The examples are presented simultaneously in four common programming languages: C++, Java, Visual Basic 5.0 and VBScript. Occasionally, JavaScript is demonstrated as well.

Samples Documentation

This section provides some documentation about the samples that come with the SDK. For the purposes of this SDK, a sample is a script or executable program that comes with the SDK in the samples directory. All pieces of code shown in the guide itself are referred to as examples.
