Named Pipes clients usually connect using the server computer name on the default pipe. However, if a server is set up to listen on an alternate pipe, the client must also be configured to communicate to that pipe.
Note The client Microsoft® Win32® Named Pipes Net-Library (Dbnmpntw.dll) does not support server enumeration on computers running Microsoft Windows® 95/98. Applications such as SQL Server Query Analyzer and SQL Server Enterprise Manager do not list the servers on the network if the server list is selected from a connection dialog box. However, server enumeration over Named Pipes on all other platforms is supported.
