Extending DTS with Custom Applications

You can use the DTS COM interface to create custom applications, using Microsoft® Visual Basic®, C++, Visual Basic Scripting Edition, or Microsoft JScript®, that allow you to extend the capabilities of DTS by defining customized transformations using DTS package, DTS scripting objects, and DTS Data Pump interfaces. This programmatic extensibility allows advanced users to meet their unique needs while continuing to leverage the functionality of DTS components such as the DTS Import and DTS Export Wizards, and DTS Designer.

Using DTS programming components, you can:

• Create and execute DTS packages.
• Create ActiveX Scripts for use in transformations.
• Create custom transformation objects that can be integrated into third-party products.
• Create data-driven queries, in which specialized, data-warehousing-oriented queries or stored procedures are executed at a destination.
• Create DTS Lookup objects that reference data at various sources.
• Manipulate DTS package DataSource objects, in which a DTS package is treated as a data source.
• Handle programmatic events such as error situations.
