Specifying Data Sources

For each of your databases, specify one or more data sources that will provide data for your cubes. As described in the following procedure, the OLAP Manager retrieves a list of OLE DB data sources and ODBC data sources defined in the ODBC Data Source Administrator. Thus, you can easily select a data source from this list.

To specify a data source, use the Data Link Properties dialog box.

To specify a data source

  1. In the OLAP Manager tree view, expand the database that will draw data from the data source, and then expand the Library folder.
  2. Right-click the Data Sources folder, and then click New Data Source.
  3. In the Data Link Properties dialog box, on the Provider tab, click an OLE DB provider.

Note The Provider tab does not appear for all types of data sources.

  4. On the Connection tab, click Use data source name, click the down arrow to display a list of data source names, and then click a data source.

If the data source you want to select does not appear in the list, you must define one. Define the data source in the ODBC Data Source Administrator, and then return to the Connection tab and click Refresh. For more information, see Defining Data Sources in the ODBC Data Source Administrator.

  5. To determine whether the data source is correctly connected, click Test Connection. If the connection is okay, you receive a message stating “Test connection succeeded.” Click OK to clear the message.
  6. In the Data Link Properties dialog box, click OK.
