How to configure a client to use TCP/IP (Client Network Utility)
To configure a client to use TCP/IP
- On the General tab, click Add.
- In the Add Network Library Configuration dialog box, select TCP/IP.
- In the Server alias box, enter the alias of the computer running Microsoft® SQL Server™ and listening on the Windows Sockets Net-Library.
With TCP/IP, you can also specify the server with its IP address instead of its name.
- The Port number box contains the port number that SQL Server is listening on. The box contains a default value of 1433, the port number that Windows Sockets Net-Library generally uses for SQL Server. In most cases, use the default port number. The port number is usually specified in the HOSTS file, if it is different from 1433 and you need to locate it:
- For a client running Microsoft Windows® for Workgroups, the HOSTS file is located in the \Windows directory by default.
- For a client running Microsoft Windows NT®, the HOSTS file is located in the \Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc directory by default.
- For other TCP/IP protocols that support Windows Sockets, see your TCP/IP documentation.
