Dimension Wizard - Introduction

The Dimension wizard takes you through the creation of a dimension for your cube.

In this step of the wizard, you specify whether your new dimension will be created from one table or from multiple tables.

To start the Dimension wizard, open the Library folder under your database in the OLAP Manager tree view, right-click the Shared Dimensions folder, point to New Dimension, and then click Wizard. This option allows you to create shared dimensions only.

The Dimension wizard also appears when you click New Dimension in the Select Dimensions step of the Cube wizard.

For more information about dimensions, see Dimensions.

Options

A single dimension table (flat or star schema)

Creates a dimension based on a star schema, that is, a single table structure. The dimension will be derived from a single table that joins to the fact table. In a cube with a star schema, all dimension tables join to the fact table.

Multiple dimension tables (snowflake schema)

Creates a dimension based on a snowflake schema, that is, multiple joined tables. The dimension will be derived from multiple joined tables; one will join to the fact table. In a cube with a snowflake schema, one or more dimension tables join to another dimension table, not the fact table.
