Data Transformation Services packages can be stored in DTS COM-structured storage files. Each COM-structured storage file can contain one or more DTS packages and multiple versions of each package. The DTS files can be located on the client, the server running SQL Server, or on a file server.
DTS files and the packages they contain can be moved easily from one user to another by copying or e-mailing the file.
Packages saved in DTS files are not automatically displayed in SQL Server Enterprise Manager. You can open a DTS file using SQL Server Enterprise Manager by right-clicking on the Data Transformation Services folder in the left pane. Select All Tasks, then select Open Package. SQL Server Enterprise Manager will then display a dialog box in which you can specify the file and the package you want to open.
Packages saved in a DTS file are not required to have unique names. Multiple packages with the same name can be saved in a DTS file.
