Package Components

Data Transformation Services packages include these components:

• Connection objects define each source or destination OLE DB data source.
• Task objects define the specific actions to be performed.
• Step objects define the sequence in which tasks are to be performed. Steps also define whether the execution of one task is dependent on the results of a prior task.

Step 1 executes Task 1, which copies and transforms data from an OLE DB source to an OLE DB destination using the DTS Data Pump. Step 2 executes Task 2, which could run a Microsoft® ActiveX® script created in Microsoft Visual Basic® Scripting Edition, or Microsoft JScript®. Step 3 runs Task 3, which could load and execute an external program (.exe), or even a batch file (.cmd or .bat).
