preposition

A part of speech that links and relates a noun or noun substitute to another word in the sentence—for example, the dancers leaped across the stage. (Across is the preposition.) Words commonly used as prepositions include about, after, among, before, between, but, by down, during, for, from, in, into, near, of, on, over, to, until, with, and so on.
