Filtering Data to Improve Efficiency

Fully replicated database designs publish all database tables to remote locations. However, to maximize the performance of your application and reduce the amount of remote storage required, or to restrict the availability of certain data to specific Subscribers, you may want to publish only the minimum amount of data required. You can limit the set of published data by filtering an article or strategically fragmenting tables according to site-specific attributes. You can use the Create Publication Wizard to publish a subset of database tables to remote locations.

Note Unlike snapshot and transactional replication, merge replication supports only horizontal filtering of a publication. However, merge replication also supports joins. You must use the Create Publication Wizard to create the horizontal filters and joins for an article.
