Adding an Anonymous Subscription

An anonymous subscription is a special type of pull subscription. Usually, information about each Subscriber is stored at the Publisher, and performance information about each Subscriber is kept at the Distributor. However, detailed information is not stored about an anonymous subscription.

If you will have a large number of Subscribers, or you don’t want the overhead of maintaining extra information, you can allow anonymous subscriptions to a publication. This can be especially useful if you want to allow Subscribers using the Internet.

An anonymous subscription must be created by the Subscriber, not the Publisher. The Subscriber is always responsible for keeping an anonymous subscription synchronized. You can create an anonymous subscription to a publication by performing the same steps that are used to create a pull subscription. If the publication is enabled for anonymous subscriptions and the server is not registered as a Subscriber at the Publisher, the Pull Subscription Wizard will create an anonymous subscription.
