In the Phase 4 database shown in Figure 1, the shading identifies two functional areas of the database. The orange tables represent the tables used by the search engine. We think of these as containing publicly exposed data. The green tables represent proprietary or confidential data in the database, including sales, inventory, and operational-specific information.
The Session table and the Settings table are independent of the other tables in the system. The Session table is used to store client context. The Settings table is used to store database-specific information such as the currency standard for the database, or the version number of the database schema.
