U

Unicode
A 16-bit character set capable of encoding all known characters and used as a worldwide character-encoding standard. Windows NT® uses Unicode exclusively; Windows® 95 and Windows® 98 do not.
unique volume name
A name containing a globally unique identifier (GUID) that is assigned to a volume. The name is guaranteed to be unique. Using unique volume names, you can avoid the ambiguity of drive letters in the Microsoft® MS-DOS®. operating system. This ambiguity arises because, unless you use the Microsoft® Windows NT®/Windows® 2000 Disk Administrator to assign MS-DOS drive letters to volumes, installing or removing a hard drive from a computer may affect the MS-DOS drive letters not only of the drive installed or removed, but of other drives as well. For more information, see Volume Mount Points and Mounting Volumes.
user-defined pen
A cosmetic or geometric pen that uses a unique series of dashes, dots, or dashes and dots defined by the user. See also cosmetic pen, geometric pen.
UTC
See Coordinated Universal Time.
