The Microsoft® Windows Media™ Format Software Development Kit (SDK) is one of the four main components of the Microsoft® Windows Media™ SDK. The other three components are the Microsoft® Windows Media™ Services SDK, the Microsoft® Windows Media™ Encoder SDK, and the Microsoft® Windows Media™ Player Control SDK.
This SDK provides support for streaming audio, video, and script data using Microsoft® Windows Media™ Services version 4.0 and Microsoft® Windows Media™ Player version 6.4.
In addition, with this SDK, the digital rights for portable players and portable media can be managed through Microsoft® Windows Media™ Device Manager.
Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology can be used with Windows Media™ files to encrypt compressed data, which can then only be decoded correctly with a public and a private key.
This SDK is based on Microsoft® Windows Media™ Technologies version 4.0. Applications written by using this SDK are not source-code-compatible with the earlier Microsoft® Windows Media™ Audio Software Development Kit (SDK), although all the functionality of that SDK is present in this one. For detailed information on how to port code from the Windows Media Audio SDK, see Porting Applications from the Windows Media Audio SDK.
