The SDMI specification concentrates on downloading content to portable devices and portable media. Although the specification indicates what components must be able to do in order to be designated as SDMI-compliant, it does not require any particular file format, music codec, or digital protection method.
Windows Media Device Manager makes it possible for independent software vendors (ISVs) to write applications that allow users to download content to a variety of portable devices in an SDMI-compliant manner. A standard plug-in with Microsoft digital rights management technology helps protect content on portable media and devices.
