Supported User Scenarios

The following partial list shows operations a user should be able to perform with a Microsoft® Windows Media™ Device Manager-based system. In some of these scenarios, an OEM or ISP must write plug-in components for which Microsoft supplies specifications but not implementations.

A list describing scenarios that are specifically prohibited is also included.

Supported User Scenarios

  1. Transferring content directly from a computer to a portable device, and playing the content.

  2. Transferring content from a computer to a portable medium, plugging the portable medium into a portable device, and playing the content.

  3. Taking the portable medium from item 2, plugging it into a different portable device, and playing the content.

  4. Taking the portable medium from item 2 and playing it on a different computer, which is configured for it and has a player.

  5. Extracting CD content directly to a portable medium or a portable device.

Prohibited User Scenarios

  1. Taking the portable medium from item 2 in Supported User Scenarios, copying any of its content to any other medium, and playing that content.

  2. Transferring content from one portable device to another (for example, over an infrared connection), and playing that content.

In other words, you cannot make a playable copy from either a portable medium or a portable device.

Some users already have content on their computers that was copied from CDs using an earlier  version of this SDK. Windows Media Device Manager cannot copy that content to an SDMI-compliant portable device. Any legitimate, unprotected digital content can be repackaged for an SDMI-compliant portable device using the other features of this SDK.
