The ASX Metafile Sample demonstrates how ASF Stream Redirector (.asx) files are used to control the presentation of content and other properties of Windows Media Player. ASX metafiles not only provide a simple redirection function (see Using ASX files in the Windows Media Player Control SDK), but with ASX scripting you can add branding information and MoreInfo links, create playlists with seamless stream switching, and insert ads.
For example, by using ASX scripting you can place ad banners in the display panel of Windows Media Player that are associated with particular .asf files or live streams. You can then associate a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) with each ad banner. When a particular .asf file or live stream is played using the .asx file, a user can click the ad banner link, prompting the browser to move to the Web page associated with the URL.
An ASX metafile can also associate Microsoft® JScript® commands, mail links, and program commands with areas of the Windows Media Player display. Complex playlists created automatically by an Active Server Page (ASP) and personalized ad insertion during a live event are two more examples of the possibilities available through creative use of ASX scripting.
