Object Explorer

[This is preliminary documentation and subject to change.]

The left frame in the WBEM Object Browser is the Object Explorer, which shows the object tree contained in the current namespace. By default, the root\DEFAULT namespace on the local machine appears. You can select a different local namespace or a namespace on a remote machine.

Clicking the plus and minus boxes expands and contracts the tree display. The tree shows regular objects and grouping nodes. Grouping nodes are not objects themselves, but are a way to organize objects. The icons next to the names indicate the type of object or node:

Regular object.
Node that groups objects by type.
Node that groups objects by association type and role. All objects beneath such a node are associated with the parent object through the same association type and role.

Some of these icons are also used in the Object Viewer.

Hovering over an object in the tree displays the object's path. The object path identifies the object in the namespace. You can also change the root of the object tree. For instructions, see Rerooting an Object Tree.

The Object Explorer also includes the following buttons:

Browse for Namespace button allows you to browse and select namespaces on the local machine or a remote machine. See Browsing for a Namespace for information.
Browse for Instance button allows you to browse classes for a specific instance and reroot the Object Explorer tree from that instance. See Using Browse for Instance to Reroot the Object Tree.
