Creating a home page for your help system

Microsoft Corporation

November 21, 1998

HTML Help enables you to build help systems that are as dynamic and flexible as the Web itself. One way to create a more Web-like help system is to develop a home page.

You can create a home page for your compiled help (.chm) file and add a Home button to the HTML Help Viewer, so users can easily return to a starting point when using help.

To add a Home button to a compiled help file:

  1. Open a project (.hhp) file, and then click Add/Modify Window Definitions.
  2. Click the Buttons tab, and then, in the Window type box, select the window for which you want to add a Home button.
  3. Select the Home check box, and then click the Files tab.
  4. Type the file name for your home page in the Home box. Make sure that the file is located in the same directory as your project file.

Note

Your home page can be different than your default topic, which is the topic that first opens when your compiled help file is opened. The home page can contain, for example, information about how to use the Help Viewer, general information about your help system, or links to the Web.
