Cross-Platform Functionality

With Internet Explorer 4.0, content authors can easily create pages that run on all platforms—the 32-bit Windows® platforms, Windows 3.1, Macintosh, and Unix. In particular, core Dynamic HTML (DHTML) and Active Channel functionality are cross-platform.

The following DHTML features are supported across platforms.

• Full CSS 1 Core
• CSS–Positioning
• DHTML–Dynamic Styles
• DHTML–Stylesheet Object Model
• DHTML–Element Collection
• DHTML–Event Model
• DHTML–Core Dynamic Content: innerHTML, outerHTML, and associated methods
• Data Binding
• HTML 4 support
• HTML dialog boxes

The following Active Channel functionality is supported across platforms.

• General CDF support
• Subscriptions, notification, offline reading

In addition, several features are available on some platforms but will degrade gracefully on other platforms.

• CSS Filters and Transitions. On some platforms, the filters and transitions may degrade to a basic filter or transition effect.
• Font Download. If a platform does not support font download, another font already on the computer will be substituted for the specified font.
• User Profile–Object Model. If a platform does not support this feature, it will appear as though the user has disabled it.

Win32 Premium Platforms

In addition to the cross-platform functionality, the versions of Internet Explorer 4.0 for the 32-bit Windows platforms (Windows® 95, Windows® 98, Windows® 2000;) support additional premium functionality, including:

• Multimedia controls
• DHTML–Extended Dynamic Content: the TextRange, Table object model, and associated methods
• Data Binding–Remote Data Service
• XML parser ActiveX® control
• Active Channels: page hit logging
• Active Channels: display as screen saver
• Active Channels: display as desktop component

In the future, support for the above features might be added to additional platforms based on customer demand.
