Welcome to the Windows Media Technologies section of the MSDN Online Web Workshop. This area provides you with the technical information you need to create and serve streaming media content on the Web.
If you're new to Windows Media Technologies, this section of Web has enough information to get you started quickly. Take a look at "ASF ABCs": this overview looks at the highly flexible and compressed ASF format, which contains streaming audio, video, slide shows, and synchronized events. Next, read "All About ASX Files." This covers using ASX files to link Web pages to ASF files on a server. While you're at it, read about codec (compressor/decompressor) technology in "Codecs 101 for Windows Media Services."
We have lots of information for Web developers who want to use streaming media on their site. Here's just an example of what you can read about in the Web Workshop: Get advice on streaming high bit rate and frame rate video content using Windows Media Technologies. Find out about creating streaming audio, and then adding the audio clip to your site.
We also have code samples that make it easy for you to create and embed streaming media on your site. Learn to embed Windows Media Player, and how to create custom frames and buttons for the embedded player. You'll definitely want to read about scripting to ensure cross-browser compatibility. Browse around to find many more articles about coding.
After creating your streaming media site, read "Serving for Windows Media Services: The Basics." This is a great introduction to the other Windows Media Technologies server topics in the Web Workshop.
Finally (don't stop reading just yet!), visit the Windows Media Technologies OSIG, where you learn how to implement Windows Media Technologies on your site, find great offers from our partners, and share your expertise with other Web professionals. For training, see "Adding Streaming Media to Your Web Site with Windows Media Technologies," located in the MSDN Online Web Workshop Training area. And, there's the Downloads area for demos and code examples you can copy and paste to your own Web site.
