Here's how you can use the Windows Media Encoder to convert stored AVI files to ASF:
1.
Make sure that your encoder PC meets the Windows Media Services system requirements . You can use Windows 95 or Windows NT on the encoder PC.
2.
Download the Windows Media Services software from the Windows Media Services product site and install the tools.
3.
Open the Windows Media Encoder (Start, Programs, Microsoft Windows Media, Beta Windows Media Encoder).
4.
Select either QuickStart, Template with I/O, Custom setting, or Open existing configuration.
QuickStart
-
QuickStart cannot be used to create ASF from AVIs. It is used for live encoding to a server.
Template with I/O
-
Select the bandwidth and the type of content you are encoding, and click the Next button.
Note: The Show scalable video template will show only the templates that support scalable video.
-
Select the AVI/WAV/MP3 file and click the Next button.
-
Select the file you want to convert to ASF and click the Next button.
-
Enter a name for the ASF file that it will create, and any limits you would like to impose on the size or length of the file, and then select the Next button. The Automatic Indexing option indexes the ASF file to allow fast forward and rewind of the ASF file. Click the Next button.
-
Enter a description for the file. The text you type in here will appear on the properties for the file in the Windows Media Player. This is optional. Then select the Finish button.
-
Press the Start button, and the AVI will be converted to ASF according to the your setting in the Windows Media Services encoder. This could take a while depending on the length and size of your AVI file.
Custom setting
- Select AVI/WAV Source, and then select the Next button.
- Select the bandwidth you would like to target for this ASF, and then select the Next button.
- Select the appropriate audio and video compression codecs for the bandwidth you are targeting. There are many choices, and each person develops their own preferences for which codecs to use. Here are some basic codec recommendations to get you started (audio is listed on top, video on bottom):
