Converting WAV Files to ASF Using Windows Media Services Real-Time Encoder

March 13, 1998

After you have finessed your audio and are ready to convert it to ASF, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Real-Time Encoder (Start, Programs, Microsoft Windows Media Services, ASF Real-Time Encoder).
  2. For source, select AVI/WAV File and Audio only, and then click the Next button.
  3. Select No when it asks if you want to specify a source file now. This allows you to save these settings so you can use them again and again on future clips. Then click the Next button.
  4. Select the bandwidth you would like to target. In our case, we would select Internet 28.8 Kbps. Then click the Next button.
  5. Select the codec you would like to use. In our case, we selected the MPEG Layer-3 codec at 20 Kbps, 11,025 hZ, mono. Then click the Next button.
  6. Specify that you want the data to go a local ASF file, and then click the Next button.
  7. Enter the name you would like to give your ASF file, and if you want, specify the maximum file duration or size. Then click the Next button.
  8. Enter a description for the stream. This is optional. Then press the Finish button. You have just created an ASD, or stream template, to use with future conversions. Select File, and then Save to save this ASD file so you can use it again in the future when you want to create content using the same selections.
  9. Now specify the input file by selecting File, and then Input File. This is where you will browse for the WAV file you want to convert to ASF.
  10. Press the Start button, and the conversion to ASF will take place.
