GIF is a graphics file format used for transmitting raster imagesa rectangular pattern of lineson the Internet. GIF files, now an industry standard, display a maximum of 256 colors (8-bit), including a transparent color, and provide substantial file-size compression. The size of the file depends on the number of colors actually used. The GIF file format is best used for graphics, such as drawings, that have crisp hard edges and areas of flat color.
With GIF, indexed color, gray scale, or bitmap images may be easily moved between computer platforms. (See also:
