O

object
A combination of code and data that can be treated as a unit, for example, a control, form, or application. Each object is defined by a class. An object is an instance of a class that combines data with procedures.
object library
A file with the .olb extension that provides information to Automation controllers.
object model
A hierarchy that represents the programmable elements of an application that can be accessed according to the rules of COM. The Active Server Pages object model, for example, is composed of the Application, Session, Server, Request, and Response objects. Collaboration Data Objects and ActiveX Data Objects are technologies represented as object models.
ODBC
See Open Database Connectivity.
OLAP
See online analytical processing.
OLE
Microsoft's object-based technology for sharing information and services across process and machine boundaries.
OLE DB
A set of OLE interfaces that provide applications with uniform access to data stored in diverse information sources, regardless of location or type. These interfaces allow data sources to share their data through common interfaces without having to implement non-native database functionality to the data store.
OLE Messaging
Predecessor of Collaboration Data Objects.
OLE Transactions
A Microsoft interface for transaction management. OLE Transactions define the interfaces that applications, resource managers, and transaction managers use to perform transactions. Applications use OLE Transactions interfaces to initiate, commit, abort, and inquire about transactions. Resource managers use OLE Transactions interfaces to enlist in transactions, to propagate transactions from process-to-process or from system-to-system, and to participate in the two-phase commit protocol. For more information, search on "OLE Transactions" in the Microsoft® Platform SDK.
OLTP
See online transaction processing.
online analytical processing (OLAP)
A technology that uses multidimensional structures to provide rapid access to data for analysis. The source data for OLAP is commonly stored in data warehouses in a relational database such as Microsoft SQL Server™.
online transaction processing (OLTP)
A database management system representing the state of a particular business function at a specific point in time. An OLTP database is typically characterized by having large numbers of concurrent users actively adding and modifying data.
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)
A standard programming language interface used to connect to a variety of data sources. This is usually accessed through the desktop's Control Panel, where data source names can be assigned to use specific ODBC drivers.
Outlook Express
The mail and news client integrated with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and later. Outlook Express supports Internet mail and news protocols.
Outlook HTML Form Converter
The Microsoft Outlook HTML Form Converter provides a way to convert a form designed and created in Microsoft Outlook into a form usable on the Web — that is, a form created from HTML and ASP code.
Outlook Web Access (OWA)
A Web application that people can use to access data on a Microsoft Exchange Server computer using an Internet browser (that supports frames and JavaScript) from a UNIX, Macintosh, or Microsoft Windows-based computer. Web Access provides Web-based public access to Microsoft Exchange Server public folders and the global address list.
OWA
See Outlook Web Access.
