See n-tier application.

trust relationship
A trust relationship is a mechanism that allows users with accounts on one Windows NT domain to access resources on another Windows NT domain.
two-phase commit protocol
A protocol to ensure that transactions involving more than one server are completed on all the servers, or on none at all. Two-phase commit is coordinated by the transaction manager and supported by resource managers.
